Best odds guaranteed: which bookmakers offer it, and from what time

Best odds guaranteed pays you the bigger starting price if it beats the price you took — but only on UK and Irish racing, only from a set time on race day, and at Sky Bet only after a weekly turnover qualifier most casual punters never clear. Here is what each operator actually promises.

What the promise actually is

Back a horse before the off and you lock in a price. If the market then shortens, you keep your price. If the market drifts and the horse starts at bigger odds, a best odds guaranteed (BOG) bet pays out at that bigger starting price instead of the one you took. It only ever moves in your favour. The catch is not in the promise itself but in when it starts, what it covers, and — at one operator in particular — what you have to do to switch it on.

The operators we review, compared

Bookmaker BOG runs from Covers The restriction that matters
bet365 8:00am race day UK & Irish horse racing and greyhounds; win, each-way and win-only fixed odds, including singles, multiples, Bet Boost and Showcast Excludes ante-post, Tote/pool bets and adjusted place terms (Each Way Extra)
William Hill 8:00am race day All UK & Ireland horse and greyhound racing, win markets, singles and multiples £25,000 daily cap on the uplift; not available in shop
Paddy Power 8:00am race day UK & Irish horse racing across the board; greyhounds on selected races only From 11 August 2026, horse racing bets need a £5 minimum stake to qualify; £50,000 daily cap
Betfair Sportsbook 8:00am race day UK & Irish horse racing, marked on the race card A sportsbook feature, distinct from the exchange itself, where lay prices make BOG meaningless — see exchange vs bookmaker
Sky Bet 9:00am until the race starts UK & Irish horse racing (greyhounds are not the current focus) Gated behind Sky Bet Club: £30 of qualifying bets in the current week, minimum odds evens, before BOG applies at all

All five exclude ante-post bets, Tote and pool betting, and most exclude enhanced or packaged multiples. Checked against each operator’s own terms, 1 October 2026.

The one that is not what it looks like

Every operator above except one offers best odds guaranteed to any qualifying bet, with no spend requirement attached. Sky Bet is the exception. Since January 2024 its BOG has sat behind the Sky Bet Club loyalty scheme: you need £30 of qualifying bets placed in the current weekly period before the guarantee switches on, and the clock resets every week. A punter backing one horse a week never clears the threshold and never gets a single BOG payout, while a daily bettor clears it most weeks without noticing. If your racing activity is occasional, Sky Bet’s headline BOG is worth close to nothing; if you bet most days, it works like everyone else’s.

This is exactly the kind of detail a bonus-focused comparison site glosses over, because “Sky Bet offers best odds guaranteed” is technically true and functionally misleading for most readers. We would rather tell you the gate exists than let you find out after a losing bet at the price you took.

What counts as a qualifying bet, in practice

Across every operator, the shape is the same even where the specifics differ: the bet has to be placed on the day of the race, generally from 8am or 9am, on a win, each-way or win-only market rather than anything with adjusted terms. Ante-post bets never qualify anywhere, because the whole point of ante-post is locking in a price well before the market has formed properly. Tote and pool bets never qualify, because they are settled on a dividend, not a fixed starting price, so there is no SP to be guaranteed against. Multiples qualify at most operators as long as every leg is itself a qualifying single.

Why this is a pricing feature, not a promotion

Free bets and deposit matches are marketing spend: an operator pays for new business once and the relationship resets. Best odds guaranteed is different — it is a standing commitment that changes the expected value of every qualifying bet you ever place with that operator, for as long as you bet there. That is why it belongs next to margin in how you choose where to bet regularly, covered in what a bookmaker’s margin is, rather than next to welcome offers on a free bet comparison. A operator with a real, ungated BOG and a tight margin is doing right by regular racing punters in a way a big sign-up offer never will.

Verdict

If you bet on UK and Irish racing regularly, bet365, William Hill, Paddy Power and Betfair all run best odds guaranteed with no spend gate and materially the same 8am start, so the choice between them comes down to the factors in our bookmaker reviews: market depth, payout speed and how each treats winning accounts. Sky Bet’s version is only worth factoring in if you already clear £30 of weekly turnover there for other reasons; otherwise, treat its BOG as a feature that exists on paper but rarely in your account.

Preguntas frecuentes

What is best odds guaranteed?

A promise that if you back a horse or greyhound ahead of the race and its starting price (SP) ends up bigger than the price you took, the bookmaker pays out at the bigger SP instead. You keep your original price if the odds shorten, so the bet can only move in your favour, never against you, on the price itself.

Does best odds guaranteed apply to football or other sports?

No, not in the form covered here. Best odds guaranteed is a UK and Irish horse racing and greyhound racing promise. A handful of operators use the same name for a narrower football promotion on specific competitions, but the core product every major UK bookmaker runs is racing-only, and that is what this guide covers.

Why does Sky Bet's best odds guaranteed feel harder to get than the others?

Because it is. Since January 2024, Sky Bet has gated best odds guaranteed behind its Sky Bet Club: you need to have placed £30 of qualifying bets in the current weekly period before BOG applies at all. A punter who bets once or twice a week can take two to three weeks to clear that threshold for the first time, during which every one of their racing bets settles at the price they took, win or lose, with no uplift if the SP was bigger.

Is best odds guaranteed the same as a free bet or bonus?

No. It costs you nothing to use, requires no opt-in code at most operators, and simply changes how a normal bet is settled: at the better of your price and the SP. It is a pricing promise on real-money bets, not a promotional credit, which is why it belongs in the same bracket as margin when you are comparing operators on value rather than on offers.
